Andrew is one of the original participants (the fourth person to enter the program!) of ACHIEVE’s former Day Treatment Program. He began attending program in June, 1986. He is originally from the NYC area and currently resides on Taft Avenue in Endicott, NY. Since the Day Treatment Program transitioned into Day Habilitation Services in 2004, Andrew then had the opportunity to begin exploring his interests in various community volunteer placements.
Some of the volunteer opportunities that Andrew participates in include delivering dog treats from ACHIEVE’s Paw Pals program to local vet offices, cleaning and joining exercise classes at Woodland Manor, and shopping for Mrs. Marion Rees through the American Red Cross Shopper Program.
Andrew has been shopping for Mrs. Rees since 2004 on a weekly basis. This particular volunteer opportunity has revealed the true meaning of “community integration” as Andrew has developed a wonderful relationship with Mrs. Rees over the years. In the summer of 2006, Mrs. Rees’ granddaughter was preparing to have a baby boy and was asking around for baby boy name ideas. Mrs. Rees thought of Andrew and shared how he was an “angel sent here to help with the things she could no longer do for herself”. Soon thereafter, a new baby boy entered the world and his name was “Andrew”.
Andrew’s current interests include going to Friendly’s restaurant, talking about NYC, going to the YMCA to play basketball or work out on the weight machines, and going for walks at the local parks.
